Spider Web Gardens
Nursery
Welcome to Spider Web Gardens Nursery Department. We offer a variety of both field grown and potted trees and shrubs.
Our field grown plants are very popular with our customers. The field production schedule allows newly rooted cuttings to be planted and remain in the field for two to three years. The plant gains unrestricted growing (as opposed to being pot grown) and produces a vigorous healthy plant which we then pot or Ball and burlap. These plants generally sell the same year so their 'pot' time is limited- offering you the customer the best and hardiest of plants. Most of the field grown items are ornamental flowering shrubs, including an incredible selection of Lilacs, Forsythia, Spirea and more.
With our huge volume and variety of nursery stock, we offer a vast assortment of potted trees and shrubs as well. Some of this material we receive as bare root plants- essentially plants with no soil but with their roots intact- in a dormant state. These plants are potted and set in the nursery on our automatic irrigation system to grow on for sales the following year. Our largest selection of potted material comes from large growers in New England and Minnesota- We even have a local supplier from NH who specializes in Rhododendrons. Our choice of growers allows us to offer you the best and hardiest of New England and northern grown plants.
A word about hardiness, Spider Web Gardens offers plants hardy to zones 2, 3, 4 and 5. Although technically the lakes region is a zone 4 area, many avid gardeners like to try some of the tender zone 5 plants. By locating these plants in a warmer 'microclimate' many of these zone 5 plants will grow and even thrive. Some examples of these less 'hardy' plants include Japanese Maples, Butterfly Bush and some of the evergreen azaleas. Please check with our helpful and knowledgeable sales staff regarding the placement of your trees and shrubs.
.Fothergilla's fall color rivals the burning bush in splendor and is an excellent substitute.
Beginning in 2007 the state of NH and the Department of Agriculture will ban nurseries from selling a number of plants which have been put on the `Invasive Species list'. Some of the more well known of these plants include Japanese Barberry, Burning Bush, Bittersweet and Norway maples It has been found that these plants spread and smother out many native species and are therefore considered to be bad for the landscape. Don't worry if you have these plants, chances are that they are behaving themselves in your yard- the restriction is for nurseries and as of next year homeowners will be offered some other choices for these old standbys. Here at Spider Web Gardens we carry many of the alternate choices and will be willing to steer you in the right direction. Some of these alternatives include Enkianthus, Fothergilla, Weigela, Ninebark, Aronia,Viburnum, Flowering Plum, Purple Beech and Red Maple.
We offer a huge selection of native plants- low maintenance, easy to grow and pretty too! You will find Viburnums and Summersweet, mountain laurel, azaleas and much more. Many of these natives will attract birds and wildlife to your yard.
