Spider Web Gardens
Fruits and Vegetables
The vegetable division is split into three parts: The vegetable plants grown here so that homeowners can grow their own delicious veggies; the actual vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, beans and corn, to name just a few; and the Vegetables for Charity Program which returns a percentage of all sales to many organizations in the community.
Many
vegetable plant varieties are grown at Spider Web. The ever popular tomatoes
are divided into four groups; small 1-3oz, medium 4-8oz, large 8-11oz and very
large 12oz and over. The small tomatoes include the Supersweet 100, which is
a red cherry; the Sungold, a fruity orange cherry; Sweet Olive, a red grape;
Tiny Tim, an heirloom, and the Roma, which is ideal for paste or puree. Mediums
are Jetstar, low acid; Lemon Boy that is a true yellow color; Early Girl, one
of the earliest producers; Marglobe a great heirloom that is crack resistant
and Celebrity, a nice slicing tomato. Some larger varieties are the Jetsetter,
very tasty; Brandywine, a deep pink heirloom; and Caspian Pink, pink fruit with
a nice flavor. For very large tomatoes we grow the Big Boy, a classic; the Better
Boy, very meaty and the Beefmaster, a beefsteak type.
Peppers come in three varieties. The Sweet Bells; Ace, great for Northern gardens,
Bell Boy, heavy yielding, and Purple Beauty, which adds color to any dish. The
Sweet Peppers include the Cubanelle, an heirloom with delicious pungent flavor,
and the Sweet Banana, a yellow tapered fryer. The hot peppers are Jalapeño
and the Large Red Cherry, both very hot, the Cherry Bomb, not as hot as the
Jalapeño, and the Senorita, the mildest of the hot peppers.
Cucumbers include vines and bush types. The Diva is a high yield, tasty, vine
cuke. Some bush types are the Fanfare, good for small gardens as is the Spacemaster.
We also sell the varieties Homemade Pickles and Slicemaster Select.
For lettuce we grow: Arugula, spicy; Blackseeded Simpson, green leaf; Buttercrunch,
Bibb type; Great Lakes, iceberg; Red Sails, red color; All Star Gourmet, mixed;
and Greens mixes, several varieties mixed together.
Broccoli, cabbages, cauliflowers, squashes, Brussels sprouts and eggplants are
just a few of the other delicious vegetable varieties you will find in the vegetable
section of the greenhouses and cold frames and can grow at home. We also grow
melon and strawberry plants. Come in and check out all of our plants that will
make your garden not only beautiful but delicious.
For delicious eating without the effort of growing, vegetables may be purchased at the little white house, at Spider Web Gardens, or just down the road at the self-serve veggie stand. Later in the season squash, melons and potatoes will also be available.
Vegetables for Charities is in its third year. Many
schools, organizations and groups have received charitable donations from this
endeavor. A portion of each vegetable sale is allocated to this fund. Feel good
about eating delicious locally grown produce and help our community at the same
time.
