OUR STORY

Family-Owned Garden and Farm in Tuftonboro, NH

In the heart of a quaint New Hampshire town, a beloved 87-year-old garden nursery is blossoming under new ownership. Spider Web Gardens, steeped in history and known for its vibrant blooms and loyal clientele, has been adopted by Ed and Leah Ronan, who are looking forward to carrying on its legacy. Ed and Leah moved to Wolfeboro five years ago, after raising three children in Franklin, MA. But they are no strangers to the Lakes Region, having vacationed here as a family for 35 years. Ed has been coming to Winnipesaukee all his life, as his grandparents lived across the lake in Gilford. The couple wanted a slower pace of life. Ed is still working as a financial planner while Leah is a retired schoolteacher. When they learned that Spider Web was for sale, they saw it as an opportunity not only to nurture plants but also to cultivate relationships. Their daughter Aubree and her fiancé Paul Glynn have moved from Massachusetts to help manage the business. Leah says “We have always loved Spider Web Gardens. It has such a rich history and a special place in the hearts of the community. We want to keep that spirit alive.” The nursery, which first opened its doors in 1938, had been run by the Williams and Stockman families for three generations. Known for its vegetable gardens, 15 greenhouses, and friendly advice, the business has become a cornerstone of the town. The Ronans would like to make their mark, bringing fresh energy and ideas to the business while respecting the nursery’s traditions. They will be introducing community events such as how to start seedlings, flower cutting/arranging, and creating a walking trail on the property for townspeople and guests to enjoy. They want the nursery to be more than just a place to buy plants, they envision it as a gathering space, where people can learn, share, and find inspiration. Leah and Ed have already felt welcomed to the Tuftonboro community with locals stopping by to visit and share stories about the nursery’s past. As spring approaches, the nursery is busy with activity. Greenhouses are filling with vibrant blooms, and the sounds of laughter echo as friends help pot plants and prepare for the busy months ahead. The Ronans are excited to be part of the story and can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds. The 87-year-old nursery is getting a fresh start, but its roots in the community remain strong, a testament to the power of family, tradition, and a little bit of dirt under your nails. Visit the nursery at 252 Middle Road in Center Tuftonboro to see its transformation for yourself, or simply to chat with the Ronans who are always eager to welcome new faces to their growing garden family
